The Carnival of Tenerife, one of the most emblematic events in the Canaries, attracts many visitors and plays a crucial role in the tourist activity of the island. It is even considered as the second largest carnival in the world (after that of Rio de Janeiro)

A little bit of history

This carnival was introduced in Tenerife in the 16th century by the Spanish and Portuguese.

• In 1980 it was declared "Fiesta d'Interés Turístico International", which highlights its importance not only locally, but globally.

• One of the characteristic traits is social criticism through song: the murgas (satirical groups) use humor to talk about politics, society and local issues.

Carnival highlights

  • Election of the Carnival Queen: it is a highly anticipated moment; candidates parade with spectacular costumes, sometimes very heavy and very elaborate.

  • Murgas: like the famous Afilarmónica NiFú-NiFá, the oldest murga, they play a central role in the festivities.

Mardi Gras / Main Parade: the 'Coso Apoteosis' is a big parade of floats, matches, music and dance.

Burial of the Sardine: symbolic and satirical ceremony that marks the end of the carnival (Ash Wednesday). A large paper sardine is paraded then 'buried' / burned, often accompanied by 'carnival widows'.

Beyond the big cities: a carnival for all

Of course, the most famous carnivals take place in Santa Cruz (and other major cities), but the party doesn’t stop there. Many villages, such as that of Garachico for example (close to my bed and breakfast Un Jardin al Mar), organize in turn their own carnival, often more modest but just as authentic.

It is a way for the inhabitants to celebrate in their own way, with parades, local murgas and very community festivities.

Meaning and spirit

The Carnival of Tenerife is not only a celebration of color and music, it is also a moment of freedom of expression, social satire, and community gathering. It blends tradition, creativity, and a form of collective catharsis - all in a joyful and inclusive atmosphere.
