Located between 1,000 and 2,000 metres above sea level, the Corona Forestal (forest crown) forms a vast belt of forests that surrounds the Teide National Park. With more than 46,000 hectares, it is the largest protected natural area in the Canary Islands. It plays an essential role in climate regulation, the preservation of biodiversity and protection against erosion.

An emblematic vegetation: the Canary pine
The landscape is dominated by the Canary pine (Pinus canariensis), an endemic species perfectly adapted to the conditions of the island. Able to resist drought thanks to its long needles that capture the humidity of the mist, it also has an astonishing ability to survive fires, thanks to its thick bark and its faculty of regeneration.
But despite these adaptations, the Corona Forestal remains very vulnerable to forest fires, especially during the summer months. Respecting the instructions in the forest is therefore crucial to preserve this fragile ecosystem.

A destination of choice for hiking enthusiasts
With its varied landscapes, spectacular viewpoints and peaceful atmosphere, the Corona Forestal is a true paradise for hikers.
There are many marked trails, suitable for different levels. Among the closest of the bed and breakfast Un Jardin al Mar (15 to 20 minutes by car), I would recommend you:
Sendero de Arenas Negras (in La Montañeta, above Garachico), crossing a beautiful pine forest on volcanic flows.
• The trails starting from San José de los Llanos, towards the Chinyero volcano.
• The trails above La Guancha (Ruta del agua, or from Casa de la Pradera to El Lagar)
and further:
• Camino de Chasna (La Orotava): ancient historical trail used to connect the south and north of the island. It crosses superb landscapes between pine trees and lava flows.
• Colouring Lunar (from Vilaflor): hike famous for its white rock formations sculpted by erosion, which evoke a lunar landscape.
• Caldera Trail in Mamio (Aguamansa): shaded and varied route, very pleasant in summer.

Spaces equipped to enjoy nature
For a day outdoors with family or friends, the Corona Forestal offers several well-equipped recreational areas (áreas recreativas), often in the middle of the forest:
• Arenas negras (La Montañeta)
• San José de los Llanos
• La Caldera (La Orotava)
• Chanajiga (Los Realejos)
• Las Lajas (Vilaflor)
• Chío (Guía de Isora)
These spaces generally have picnic tables, barbecues, toilets and sometimes even playgrounds. They are very frequented by the inhabitants on weekends, especially in summer.
